UK households produce 30.5 million tonnes of waste each year, just 17 per cent is collected for recycling, whilst almost 60 per cent of what ends up in the bin could be recycled [DEFRA].
And according to Love Food, Hate Waste almost 50 per cent of the total amount of food thrown away in the UK comes from our homes. We throw away 7 million tonnes of food and drink every year, more than half could actually still be eaten!
There’s a whole mixture of things that needs to be done to improve recycling rates, both at government level – like the new Circular Economy Directives, to a low level – simply remembering to utilise that recycling bin and thinking of creative ways to reuse, recycle or even upcycle.

With 57,000 people following Upcyclista Facebook page, there’s a wealth of ideas on how to turn old draws into an attractive desk or turning a skateboard into a chair.
By now most people are familiar with freecycle, the page for freely swapping your no longer wanted items with other people. Their Facebook feed is filled with good ideas for your no longer wanted items.
